Villa Vie's MV Odyssey cruise ends in Cambodia amid financial crisis

सारांश

The luxury cruise ship MV Odyssey was abandoned in Cambodia after Villa Vie Residences failed to secure funding, leaving over 200 passengers and crew stranded.

The MV Odyssey, marketed as a continuous around-the-world cruise when it launched in October 2024, was abandoned in Cambodia earlier this week, forcing more than 200 passengers and crew to disembark after the operator, Villa Vie Residences, halted operations due to severe cash shortages.

Internal documents obtained by CBS News show that the ship faced a series of financial emergencies over the preceding three months, including a fuel shortage while docked in Singapore, halted food shipments, and a temporary detention in Hong Kong after a court order required payment of $167,844.48 to a fuel supplier.

"There's no question that we ran out of money in Singapore," said Darrell Carp, a resident who reported a loss of $250,000. Residents also expressed concerns that the company's debt levels were unclear and that crew wages, provisions, and fuel payments were already overdue.

In August, Villa Vie launched a VIP "Villa Incentive Program" that allowed existing passengers to purchase additional cabins at discounted rates to raise emergency funds. The program secured commitments for more than 20 cabins, but the company continued to operate at a loss; internal calculations indicated monthly operating costs of $3.1 million against projected revenue of $2.5 million at full occupancy.

Sources said the ship's director allegedly paid local customs officials in Vietnam to allow food supplies aboard after a vendor refused delivery due to unpaid invoices. The vessel was later detained in Hong Kong until the required fuel payment was made.

Founder Mike Petterson attributed the collapse to rising fuel prices and indicated the company may file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure its debts. The incident follows earlier announcements that Villa Vie was considering the purchase of a second ship, the Legacy, and had offered prospective cabin buyers immediate residency on the Odyssey just weeks before the financial shortfall became critical.
