Three shot and one injured in Bridle Path home invasion

Summary

Masked gunmen broke into a Toronto home early Thursday, shooting three adults and striking another with a hammer, while police investigate the robbery motive.

Police said three masked gunmen entered a house on Hyde Park Circle in Toronto's Bridle Path neighbourhood shortly after 3 a.m. on Thursday. The intruders demanded money or valuables, fired multiple shots and used a hammer, leaving the father and his two adult daughters with gunshot wounds and a fourth adult with a hammer injury.

"There was a demand made for valuables within the home," Toronto Police Inspector Kristy Smith of the Hold Up Squad told reporters. "The suspects fired their guns, multiple times, and one victim was struck with a hammer. Three members of the family, the father and his two daughters, sustained gunshot wounds."

Two of the injured remain in hospital with serious injuries, and police have not disclosed the victims' identities. Investigators have not confirmed what, if anything, was taken and are seeking bullet casings to help identify the suspects.

Inspector Smith said the motive appeared to be greed, noting that affluent neighbourhoods often attract criminals seeking "nice things." She advised residents to stay alert and call 911 if they feel they are being followed.

The incident comes as Toronto reports a rise in home invasions, with 119 cases recorded in 2026, a 35 percent increase from the previous year, even as overall shootings and homicides have declined.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow issued a statement condemning the attack, saying the violence is unacceptable and emphasizing the need for residents to feel safe in their homes.
