Maya Gebala, who survived the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, was released from B.C. Children’s Hospital after more than eight months of treatment.

Maya Gebala, the sole survivor of the February 2025 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was discharged from B.C. Children’s Hospital 262 days after being airlifted there for treatment. Her father, David Gebala, announced the news in a social-media post on Thursday, noting the multiple surgeries and setbacks she endured, as well as milestones such as breathing unaided, opening her eyes and speaking for the first time since the attack.

"There was never a day I stopped believing we would get here. The road ahead is still long, but this is a milestone no one thought we would reach. Maya, you are the bravest person I know. You are an inspiration to so many people. Giving up was never an option for me, and it clearly never was for you either," David wrote.

"Thank you to the incredible nurses, doctors, and therapists who walked every step of this with us. Thank you to everyone who supported Maya and our family. We could not have done this without each and every one of you. Now it’s time to leave these hospital walls behind and keep moving forward," he added.

The shooting on Feb. 10, 2025, claimed six lives at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and two additional victims at a second location before the 18-year-old gunman died from self-inflicted wounds.
