Federal Agents Deploy Chemical Agents at Broadview ICE Facility Protest
Federal agents used chemical agents against protesters at the Broadview ICE facility, resulting in multiple arrests and allegations of excessive force.
Federal agents deployed chemical agents against demonstrators outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, leading to multiple arrests and allegations of excessive force. The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) of Chicago reported that its legal observers witnessed agents using pepper balls and apparent tear gas on all protesters and individuals gathered.
The NLG also noted other concerning actions, including an agent unholstering his handgun and a van driven by agents nearly running over a protester who had fallen in its path.
Prior to the incident, Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino appeared on Fox News, stating that there had been "several hundred [immigration] arrests" in the Chicago area over the past week. He described Chicago as a "non-permissive environment" and accused local Democratic leaders of rhetoric that leads to violence against law enforcement.
The protest drew attention from political figures, including three Democratic primary candidates from the 9th congressional district—Daniel Biss, Bushra Amiwala, and Kat Abughazaleh—who reported on social media that they were tear-gassed by federal agents during the demonstration.
The NLG Chicago chapter condemned the federal agents' actions, stating that the response was "especially violent and aggressive," with many arrested individuals reporting extensive physical injuries.
The organization emphasized the importance of respecting First Amendment rights and expressed concern over the use of force against peaceful protesters.
