Tumbler Ridge shooting survivor Maya Gebala discharged after nine months
Maya Gebala, a 13-year-old injured in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, was released from B.C. Children’s Hospital following a series of surgeries and ongoing recovery, according to her father.
Maya Gebala, who was critically wounded in the February 2025 Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, left B.C. Children’s Hospital on Thursday after nearly nine months of treatment. Her father, David Gebala, posted a video on Facebook showing his daughter in a wheelchair and announced that she would be returning home.
"It's been 262 days since you were airlifted to B.C. Children's Hospital," he wrote, recalling the doctors' earlier prognosis that she might not survive the night.
The family has communicated updates primarily through social media rather than the press. Earlier posts indicated a possible permanent move to Vancouver for continued care, though the current status of that plan was not confirmed.
Court documents filed in April 2026 detail that Gebala sustained three gunshot wounds, one of which fractured her skull and caused brain injury. She has undergone five surgeries, including a cranioplasty in May to install a prosthetic plate to manage swelling.
Since leaving the hospital, the family has shared videos of Gebala participating in activities around Vancouver, including attending a Foo Fighters concert for her 13th birthday in September. Legal actions related to the shooting also mention lawsuits against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, which the company seeks to dismiss.
