A City of Toronto traffic agent was killed on Thursday morning after a dump truck struck him while he was directing traffic at the intersection of Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard in the Thorncliffe neighbourhood of East York. Police were dispatched shortly after 9 a.m. following reports of the collision. The 32-year-old agent had waved the truck through the intersection before being hit by the same vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver remained at the location.

Mayor Olivia Chow issued a statement expressing sympathy for the agent’s family, friends and colleagues and acknowledging the risks faced by traffic agents. She said the city stands with them during the grieving period.

The intersection remains closed, with Overlea Boulevard shut between Leaside Park Drive and Millwood Road and Millwood Road closed between Redway Road and Pape and Donlands Avenues. Drivers are being directed to use alternate routes while investigators and cleanup crews continue their work.
