DoorDash to acquire Instacart in $17 billion deal

Resumen

DoorDash announced a $17 billion acquisition of Instacart, aiming to combine its restaurant-delivery network with Instacart’s grocery-delivery platform.

DoorDash said on Thursday that it will acquire Instacart for $17 billion, paying $65 per Instacart share. The transaction has been approved by the boards of both companies and is slated to close by the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028.

Instacart CEO Chris Rogers said the merger will allow the companies to expand their capabilities, adding that Instacart’s grocery technology and retailer relationships will be combined with DoorDash’s consumer reach and logistics.

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu noted that grocery delivery presents unique challenges and that the combined resources could give stores of all sizes more tools to improve service and keep spending local.

DoorDash plans to retain Instacart’s brand, enterprise technology products, and app, and the two businesses will operate independently until the deal is finalized. The companies said the partnership could help grocers develop their own online ordering platforms and advertising operations using Instacart’s technology, while also leveraging DoorDash’s fulfillment network for lower-cost delivery.
