Top U.S. Army strategist Brett Sylvia dismissed amid defense leadership changes

Résumé

Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia was removed from his position as head of strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, part of a broader reduction of senior officers announced by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

The Pentagon confirmed that Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia has been relieved of his duties as the head of strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to a report citing unnamed defense department officials. No replacement has been announced and no specific reason for the dismissal was provided.

The move follows a series of high-profile departures from the military since President Donald Trump returned to office a year ago. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth earlier said the United States has cut the number of its generals and admirals by 20 percent, describing the reductions as an "accomplishment" aimed at improving accountability and focusing the force on war-fighting priorities.

Sylvia’s career includes command of the 101st Airborne Division and leadership of a unit in Iraq. The timing of his ouster coincides with reports that President Trump is considering additional strikes against Iran.

"We may do another little Epic Fury," Trump said last week, referencing the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Tehran in February.

The United States and Iran have not conducted major land-based attacks since early September, limiting engagements to strikes on commercial vessels. AFP sought comment from the Pentagon without receiving a response.
