Pentagon Removes Top J5 Planner Amid Ongoing Iran Strike Deliberations

Résumé

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the head of the Joint Chiefs' strategy, plans and policy directorate, as President Trump considers additional military action against Iran.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s senior officer responsible for strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to a senior defence official who requested anonymity. Sylvia, who previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division and served as vice director for the J5, was removed without an immediate replacement and no public explanation was provided.

The Joint Staff issued a statement expressing gratitude for Sylvia’s 32 years of service and wishing his family well. The J5 directorate typically coordinates military plans with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the president, a role that gains heightened attention as President Donald Trump continues to discuss potential new strikes against Iran following the eight-month conflict that began with Israel’s actions.

U.S. officials have advised regional allies to prepare for possible renewed operations after the upcoming midterm elections, though diplomats said Trump has not yet made a final decision. Additional forces, including a third aircraft carrier and thousands of troops, are moving toward the region.

Sylvia’s removal follows a series of senior officer departures under Hegseth’s tenure, including the forced retirement of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Joseph McGee, in October. Hegseth previously announced a plan to cut 20 percent of senior officer positions by January 2027, describing the effort as "accountability and long overdue." Some members of Congress have criticized the reductions, labeling them a "purge" that could take years to reverse.

The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment on Sylvia’s dismissal.
