Poundland seeks administrator appointment as owners explore rescue options

सारांश

Poundland has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, giving the retailer a short period to secure a rescue deal or sale.

Poundland has lodged a notice of intention to appoint administrators, a step that, if sanctioned by the High Court, will grant the retailer a ten-day window to arrange a rescue transaction. Managing director Barry Williams sent a memo to the chain’s 12,000 employees, noting that the American owner had restricted access to additional funding.

The business was acquired by Gordon Brothers from the Polish group Pepco for £1 last year. After more than a year, Gordon Brothers placed Poundland up for sale in September. Irish firm Martin Property Group submitted a bid to acquire the chain as a going concern, but the offer did not satisfy Gordon Brothers’ expectations.

Gordon Brothers aims to recover a £30 million shareholder loan inherited from the previous owners. The Martin Property Group proposal fell short of that amount. The retailer now faces an insolvency process, with Gordon Brothers considering either a pre-pack administration to find a new owner or the breakup of the chain, potentially selling individual stores to interested parties such as Iceland, Lidl or B&M.
