UK Budget Introduces £100 Energy Payment for Millions of Households, Including Wandsworth Residents

摘要

The 2026 Budget announced a £100 one-off Household Energy Payment for 20 million English households in council-tax bands A-D, sparking debate over its impact on rising energy costs.

The chancellor announced a £100 Household Energy Payment that will be paid directly into the bank accounts of 20 million households in England that fall within council-tax bands A to D. The scheme, part of a £2.6 billion package, is intended to help families cope with higher energy bills as the regulator’s price cap is expected to rise by about 26 percent in January.

In the affluent south-London borough of Wandsworth, where the average resident earns more than £52,000 a year and council tax is among the lowest in the country, many locals will receive the payment. Residents interviewed by The i Paper described the payment as modest. One resident said the £100 would likely be used for the energy bill but might be absorbed by other expenses, while another called it “helpful” but warned it would be quickly spent as winter approaches.

Critics argue that the non-means-tested payment will benefit wealthier households and may not reach those most in need. Campaigners from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition said the payment “will barely dent” the predicted rise in energy costs and questioned whether the money would be spent on heating at all. The chancellor responded that the payment, together with the removal of gas standing charges and other measures, would give families “breathing space” on their energy bills.

The scheme will be administered through the council-tax system from January 2027, with devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland receiving a share of the funding. Analysts note that while the payment covers a portion of the expected £112 increase in the first three months of the year, the overall impact on household budgets remains limited.
