Bears quarterback Caleb Williams avoids fine for wearing unauthorised Caddix cleats in Week 7

Summary

The NFL fined Caleb Williams for unauthorised shoes in Week 6 but has not issued a fine for his Week 7 appearance in the same Caddix cleats, which lack a league licensing agreement.

The NFL imposed an $11,941 fine on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams after he wore shoes with an unauthorised logo during the Week 6 game in Atlanta. A source familiar with the matter said the league has not yet fined him for wearing the same brand, Caddix, in Week 7, despite the company not having a licensing deal with the NFL.

Williams explained his choice of footwear, saying he prioritises health and durability on the field. > "I’m huge into trying to stay on the field. I’m huge into trying to be healthy. The cleats are super comfy and they’re a science-type of cleat that reduces tension on tendons and joints, helping players stay healthy over a long career," he said via ESPN reporter Courtney Cronin.

The league did not fine Williams for wearing Caddix shoes during the preseason or the early weeks of the regular season, and he missed Weeks 3 through 5 with a hamstring injury. Caddix has indicated it will cover the Week 6 fine, although league rules generally prohibit third-party payment of fines. An endorsement arrangement could address that restriction.

The case highlights a tension between the NFL’s contractual obligations to licensed shoe manufacturers and the potential health benefits of unlicensed footwear.
