Caleb Williams Faces NFL Fines for Wearing Caddix Cleats
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been fined $35,823 by the NFL for wearing Caddix SmartStuds cleats, which he believes enhance player safety. Despite the fines, Williams intends to continue wearing the cleats without covering their logo.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has incurred fines totaling $35,823 from the NFL for wearing Caddix SmartStuds cleats, which are designed to reduce the risk of non-contact injuries. The fines were issued for displaying an unauthorized logo during games against the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. Caddix, a small company with only four employees, claims that its innovative cleat technology can help prolong players' careers.
Jack Rasmussen, CEO of Caddix, acknowledged the fines but expressed support for Williams, stating, "Caleb Williams bought [our cleats], liked them, wore them, and now he's being penalized for liking them and wearing them." He emphasized that the company has not paid Williams for endorsements, and noted that over 80 players, including notable names like Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey, wear Caddix cleats without facing similar fines.
Williams has appealed his initial fine and plans to continue wearing the cleats, which feature patented SmartStuds technology aimed at minimizing rotational stress on players' knees and ankles. He stated, "I'm huge into trying to stay on the field. I'm huge into trying to be healthy. They're smart cleats. They're science cleats, and they've been working for me."
The NFL maintains strict regulations regarding player uniforms and branding, with the authority to bar players from games for non-compliance. While Williams has not yet been prevented from playing, the league's existing rules could allow for such action if he continues to defy branding standards. Williams' appeal hearing is scheduled for November 10.
