Raptors dominate Magic 129-99 as they showcase depth without Leonard
Toronto beat Orlando 129-99, highlighting contributions from RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes and bench players, offering a template for success while Kawhi Leonard recovers from a knee injury.
Toronto rallied from a nine-point early deficit to post a 129-99 victory over the Orlando Magic at Scotiabank Arena, demonstrating a balanced attack that could serve the Raptors as they navigate Kawhi Leonard’s knee injury. RJ Barrett led the first half with 12 points in nine minutes, finishing with 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Scottie Barnes responded with 28 points and a strong defensive showing.
Coach Darko Rajakovic said the win validates the team’s confidence in its depth, noting, "You don’t have an opportunity to add a player like Kawhi Leonard that easily… we believe we have a pretty deep roster. We saw pretty much these same guys perform in the playoffs and we are confident in the work we’re putting in that guys are improving and getting better."
Bench contributions were pivotal. Jamal Shead, after a slow start to the season, scored 13 points and dished seven assists, while Ja’Kobe Walter added 14 points. Collin Murray-Boyles recorded 10 points and five rebounds despite foul trouble, and Trayce Jackson-Davis posted a season-high 20 minutes with six points and 11 rebounds.
The Magic, missing key players Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs, shot 41.2 percent and committed 20 turnovers, underscoring Toronto’s defensive effort. The win moved the Raptors to a 3-1 record, while the Magic fell to 1-3. The teams will meet again on Friday as the NBA Cup play begins, with the Raptors hoping to replicate the performance.
