Congress Aims for One Million Attendees at Ramlila Maidan Rally Ahead of Anti-SIR Campaign
Congress leaders said they are mobilising a million-person rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan to challenge the chief election commissioner and promote their anti-SIR agenda, while expecting a boost to local businesses.
Congress officials said they are targeting a crowd of one million for a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, describing the event as a test of strength for the opposition INDIA bloc. > "Our target is to bring 10 lakh (one million) people. Ensuring the success of this rally is the collective responsibility of all parties within the INDIA alliance, and everyone is actively involved," Congress Rajya Sabha MP Nasir Hussain told NDTV.
Hussain said the party has instructed its MPs, MLAs and state-level officials to take part, and that the Samajwadi Party and left-wing groups have been given significant roles. He added that the influx of attendees is likely to benefit nearby traders, noting that visitors typically purchase goods and that the rally will generate demand for banners, flags, posters and transport services.
The rally could face logistical challenges after the Delhi government implements GRAP-1 on November 1, which will restrict non-BS-VI vehicles from entering the city. Hussain said the Congress will continue street-level campaigning while monitoring related Supreme Court proceedings.
He also referenced the BJP’s planned foot march in Chandni Chowk, saying the opposition intends to keep pressure on the government over the “SIR” issue, which he described as an attempt to undermine voting rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The party plans to hold a mock parliament session on Friday to keep the issue in public focus.
