Actress Barbara Barrie, Oscar nominee and Cannes winner, dies at 95

Resumen

Barbara Barrie, known for her roles on "Barney Miller" and in the film "Breaking Away," died at age 95 after a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Barbara Barrie died at her home in New York City at the age of 95, following a diagnosis of terminal cancer, her daughter told The New York Times. The veteran actress had a career that spanned more than six decades, beginning on Broadway in the mid-1950s and extending to film and television work up to last year.

Barrie is remembered for playing the wife of the title character on the police series "Barney Miller" and for her role as Brooke Shields' grandmother on "Suddenly Susan." She earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the 1979 film "Breaking Away" and won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 for "One Potato, Two Potato."

Her stage work included a Tony nomination for the original 1970 production of Stephen Sondheim's "Company," and she appeared as Goldie Hawn's mother in the 1980 comedy "Private Benjamin."

"To tell you the truth, the only reason I went was because I had a boyfriend who was living there. We were supposed to get married but couldn’t right away," Barrie said in a 1963 interview with the Akron Beacon Journal. "Since I had gone to all the trouble of moving to New York, I figured I might as well try to act."
