Incumbent Scott Gillingham Re-elected as Winnipeg Mayor

Résumé

Scott Gillingham secured a second term as mayor of Winnipeg, while seven new councillors joined the city council after two incumbents were defeated.

Incumbent mayor Scott Gillingham was projected by CBC to have won a second term in Winnipeg’s municipal election, with 168 of 245 polls reporting by 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday. Winnipeg Sun CEO Kevin Klein placed second and software developer Noah Redden third in the early count.

The city council will retain several incumbents, including Evan Duncan (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood), Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre), Vivian Santos (Point Douglas), Matt Allard (St. Boniface), Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) and Emma Durand-Wood (Elmwood-East Kildonan). At least seven newcomers will join the council after Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) and Shawn Dobson (St. James) lost to Greg McFarlane and Kelly Ryback, respectively.

Other council results projected by CBC include Jeff Palmer winning Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry, Chris Sigurdson taking St. Vital, Ray DuBois securing St. Norbert-Seine, Sara MacArthur winning River Heights-Fort Garry and Greg McFarlane capturing Old Kildonan.

Gillingham, who first won the mayoralty in 2022 with 27.5 percent of the vote, faced a narrower margin in a recent poll but maintained a lead on election night. The election featured 54 council candidates and more than 90 school-trustee candidates.

Voter participation increased, with a record number of advance votes cast, although overall turnout figures were not released. Outside Winnipeg, several Manitoba municipalities saw mayors acclaimed or council slates confirmed, and mayoral contests continued in Brandon, Flin Flon, The Pas and Thompson.
