Manitoba municipal elections see high turnout and increased candidate diversity
Polling stations across Manitoba are open until 8 p.m. as voters cast ballots for mayors, councillors and school trustees, with over 38,000 votes recorded by noon and a record number of advance voters.
Municipal elections are underway across most of Manitoba, with polling locations operating from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters are choosing mayors (or reeves in rural areas), councillors and school trustees in the province's 137 municipalities. By midday, the City of Winnipeg reported that more than 38,000 ballots had been cast.
In Winnipeg's Waverley West neighbourhood, resident Emily Burt brought her children to the Bison Run School polling station, saying she wanted them to experience voting early. "I want them to know that it's important to have a voice, especially in your own city," she said.
The ward will have a new councillor after Janice Lukes, who has served since 2018, announced she will not run again. Candidates are focusing on issues such as a new hockey rink and traffic improvements on Bison Drive and Waverley Street.
First-in-line voter Tyler Wiwchar described his early arrival as a way to ensure he could vote, likening his decision-making process to a quick hockey play. Another voter, Bola Osagie, called the election "a wonderful opportunity to express what I want to see done in the city."
The Association of Manitoba Municipalities noted that the share of uncontested races fell to 30 % from 37 % in 2022, while the number of women candidates rose to 340 from 289. Some municipalities, including Portage la Prairie, Winkler and Niverville, still had mayoral acclamations due to a lack of challengers.
Winnipeg offers 184 polling stations, and voters receive a card indicating two convenient locations. Senior election official Sherwood Armbruster said the city recorded more than 50,000 advance votes, a 20 % increase over the previous record. Voters are reminded to bring either their voter notice or a government-issued photo ID with name and address.
