Brodeur says Hellebuyck expands Devils' window of winning

Résumé

Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur praised the trade for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, saying his arrival gives New Jersey a stronger chance to compete.

Martin Brodeur told NHL Network that acquiring Connor Hellebuyck widens the New Jersey Devils' "window of winning," noting the team’s core of players such as Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Timo Meier is largely in its late 20s. He credited general manager Sunny Mehta for executing the trade that sent forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, the rights to prospect Alexander Command and two draft picks to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Hellebuyck.

Hellebuyck recorded 17 saves in a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars, his first win with the Devils and his first NHL appearance since April 13. The 30-year-old goaltender, now in his 12th NHL season, has started at least 50 games in nine of the past ten seasons.

"I wanted to play every game," Brodeur said, adding that top goalies aim to influence outcomes each night and that Hellebuyck’s experience and size provide a confidence boost for teammates and a psychological challenge for opponents.

Brodeur also highlighted the benefit of having Jake Allen as a tandem partner, describing the duo as a valuable asset. He praised Mehta’s calculated approach to roster moves, noting the organization’s earlier attempt to acquire Jacob Markstrom, who was later dealt to the Florida Panthers.

While acknowledging that Hellebuyck will need time to adjust to a new defensive system, Brodeur expressed confidence in the goaltender’s ability to succeed in any situation.

"Elite goalies are elite goalies. You could put them in any kind of situation and they'll succeed," he said, adding that the team is excited to have Hellebuyck on board.
