Manchester United coach Carrick and captain Fernandes discuss team issues

Résumé

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick met with captain Bruno Fernandes to address recent performances, and Fernandes is expected to be available for the upcoming match against Chelsea.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes met at the club's Carrington training ground for a private discussion, separate from a full-squad meeting, according to the Press Association. The talks followed United's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como and a 3-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth, after which Fernandes was omitted from the starting lineup.

"We needed to clear the air and talk about how we move forward," a source close to the meeting said.

Following the meeting, reports indicate that Fernandes is likely to be selected for United's away match against Chelsea on Saturday. United currently sit 16th in the Premier League with only one league win this season, a victory over Ipswich Town.

Carrick, who took over as manager in January, was given a two-year contract in the summer after guiding the team to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. However, the club has won just two of its 12 matches across all competitions this term.

The club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, and chief executive, Omar Berrada, have also faced criticism for the squad's lack of reinforcement during the summer transfer window.
