At least 10 killed in high-speed train collision in Toledo province

摘要

A rear-end collision between two high-speed trains in central Spain has left at least ten people dead and many injured, prompting suspension of services between Madrid and Seville.

At least ten people were confirmed dead after a rear-end collision between two high-speed trains on the Madrid-Seville line in Toledo province, central Spain. The incident forced the suspension of services between Madrid and the southern region of Andalucía.

Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, told local media that the death toll could rise as more information becomes available. "The information we are receiving is not good at all. There are at least 10 dead and it is possible that the number will increase," she said.

State rail infrastructure authority Adif confirmed the crash occurred when one train ran into the back of another, knocking two carriages off the track. Video from regional television showed a derailed carriage perched on an elevated section of track, with twisted metal and wreckage scattered below.

Mayor Manuel Galán of Urda, near Toledo, said emergency services had asked the municipality to ready a sports hall for the injured.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X that he was in constant contact with the transport minister and the president of Castilla-La Mancha, noting that emergency teams were working on the ground to assist victims.

"I remain in constant contact with the transport minister, and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha. Emergency services are working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety, in coordination with all the involved administrations."

People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo also expressed concern on X, emphasizing the priority of caring for victims and supporting emergency responders.

"Very concerned about the information we are getting about a new rail accident. The priority now is to attend to the victims and support their families. My full support to the emergency teams working on the ground."

The crash comes as Spain’s main political parties pause campaign activities ahead of next month’s general election.
