Two high-speed trains collide in Toledo province, casualties reported

Résumé

At least ten people were killed when a Renfe train and an Iryo train collided on a high-speed line in Toledo, Spain, prompting emergency response and suspension of the route.

Two high-speed trains operated by state-owned Renfe and private operator Iryo collided on Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda, according to railway infrastructure manager ADIF. The trains were travelling on the Madrid-Seville corridor when the crash forced the suspension of the high-speed line linking the capital with Andalusia.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was "shocked by the serious train incident" and posted on X that emergency services were on the ground to assist those impacted.

Local officials reported that authorities are preparing a facility to receive any injured individuals following a request from the Civil Protection agency. The mayor of Los Yébenes said only limited information was available and described the event as a serious accident.

The incident follows two other major rail accidents in Spain this year, including a January collision in Córdoba province that killed more than 40 people and a recent commuter-train derailment near Barcelona. Investigations are ongoing, and the extent of injuries from the Toledo crash remains unclear.
