Residential cruise ship orders passengers to disembark after fuel shortage

Resumen

The Villa Vie Odyssey, a luxury residential cruise vessel, halted operations in Cambodia due to sharply higher fuel costs, prompting the company to ask cabin owners to leave the ship.

The Villa Vie Odyssey, marketed as a full-time residential cruise ship, announced that passengers must disembark after the vessel ran out of fuel while docked in Cambodia. The company said the ship would enter a temporary lay-up, with crew remaining on board to maintain essential systems.

A notice posted by the operator explained that “unfortunately, we were unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations,” and that the decision was driven by “extraordinary increases in fuel costs” in the regions where the vessel operates. The company added that monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which historically averaged about $1,800 (AUD 2,500), have risen to an estimated $6,000-$8,000 (AUD 8,500-$11,500) in parts of Asia, creating a shortfall that makes the current operating model financially unsustainable.

The operator said it has suspended operations in Cambodia while it evaluates restructuring and recapitalisation alternatives. Cabin ownership on the ship starts at roughly $87,000 for a five-year term, with full ownership beginning at about $145,000, and residents pay around $3,000 in monthly fees.

One cabin owner, who lives on the ship full-time, said the notice to leave was given early in the morning with a deadline later that day. The resident described the experience as physically and emotionally tiring. Another resident, who moved aboard last year, said the lifestyle had been appealing and financially advantageous compared with living on the U.S. West Coast.

The vessel, which began accepting guests in 2024 after resolving technical issues that delayed its departure from Belfast, was scheduled to travel to 425 ports in 147 countries over three and a half years before returning to its route. A second ship, named Legacy, is planned for launch in 2029.
