Former Teacher Confronts Ohio Gubernatorial Candidate Over Controversial Attack Ad

Vivek Ramaswamy faced criticism from his former eighth-grade teacher and several Ohio Republicans after a campaign ad targeting Amy Acton’s mother sparked backlash.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a candidate for Ohio governor, was confronted by Michael Pogue, who taught the candidate in eighth grade, at a recent campaign event. Pogue displayed signs demanding a retraction and apology for an advertisement that featured Dr. Amy Acton’s mother, Donna, accusing her daughter of lying.

The ad, which Ramaswamy acknowledged, has been criticized for referencing Acton’s personal history of childhood abuse. Ramaswamy defended the spot, citing a political strategy similar to that of President Donald Trump and stating that the ad focused on Acton’s alleged false statements during the campaign.

"You never start a fight, but when you find yourself in one, you finish it," Ramaswamy told Fox News.

"We condemn that as forcefully as anyone. Our ad was about a consistent track record of Amy Acton telling lies, including during this campaign," he added to reporters.

Ohio officials, including Governor Mike DeWine and Republican Senator Jon Husted, denounced the advertisement and urged Ramaswamy to withdraw it. Two venues also canceled events scheduled for the candidate. In contrast, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance defended the ad, with Vance urging Republicans to support the campaign.

The controversy has intensified scrutiny of Ramaswamy’s campaign tactics as the election approaches.
