Eric Samulski releases Week 8 2026 fantasy football defense rankings and methodology update

Analyst Eric Samulski released his Week 8 rankings of fantasy football defenses for the 2026 NFL season, highlighting that five of his top-10 picks finished in the top ten and that he correctly identified ten of the top sixteen defenses, outperforming the FantasyPros consensus. He cited major misses, including the Carolina Panthers (ranked 8th, finished 26th), the New York Jets (ranked 3rd, finished 20th) and the Houston Texans (ranked 2nd, finished 16th), noting that favorable matchups had inflated those rankings.

Samulski observed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom he placed 18th, led the league with 25 fantasy points, while the Atlanta Falcons, ranked 23rd, finished second with 11 points, describing the Buccaneers’ performance as a possible fluke driven by defensive touchdowns. He attributed some over-valuations to an overly generous injury credit in his model, which had stacked multiple injured opponents without limit. The revised model now caps injury credit at five points and differentiates between reserve, starter and star injuries.

The analyst also explained his "Best Overall Defense" (BOD) formula, which now incorporates seven metrics: first-down allowance, points allowed, third-down conversion rate, pressure rate, passes defended, turnover rate and explosive-play rate allowed. He doubled the weight of the first three metrics and added Vegas implied team totals and opponent fantasy points to the algorithm, while planning weekly adjustments for injuries and weather.

Samulski’s Tier 1 defenses include the Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Cleveland), New England Patriots (vs. Miami) and Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. Indianapolis). Tier 2 features teams such as the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings. He provided brief rationales for each selection, emphasizing matchup quality, opponent offensive stats and recent injury reports.
