CFP bracket projection shows SEC dominance amid uncertainty

摘要

A new College Football Playoff projection predicts the SEC could secure three to five of the twelve spots, while the Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12 each likely earn fewer bids as the season approaches its final weeks.

The latest College Football Playoff projection, released ahead of next week’s official rankings, highlights a crowded SEC field that could claim three to five of the twelve playoff positions. The conference currently holds the No. 3 Georgia slot and four additional teams ranked between No. 9 and No. 12, as well as three more between No. 15 and No. 17 in the Associated Press top-25 poll. Injuries and recent upsets add complexity to the committee’s evaluation, especially when comparing three-loss SEC teams to two-loss teams from other leagues.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State and Indiana appear poised for playoff berths, while an undefeated UCLA remains a contender if it reaches 11 or 12 wins. Outside those programs, the odds for Oregon, Northwestern and Nebraska are modest, and both USC and Iowa have slipped from early-season contention.

The ACC is projected as a likely one-bid league, with Miami expected to secure the spot. Wake Forest could join the field if it wins its remaining games, including a matchup against SMU, which the model lists as a dark-horse contender.

The Big 12’s chances for multiple bids have diminished after recent upsets. Utah and BYU retain strong resumes, though their low strength-of-schedule rankings (No. 72 for BYU, No. 87 for Utah) may become points of debate.

Team-specific odds reflect these trends: Miami holds a 98.2% chance of making the playoff, Georgia 94.8%, Ohio State 94.8%, Utah 93.5%, Indiana 94.8%, UCLA 37.1%, BYU 45%, Kentucky 84.8%, Notre Dame 70%, Texas 49%, Ole Miss 45%, and Boise State 30%.

The projected first-round matchups pair lower-seeded teams against higher seeds, with potential quarterfinal and semifinal pairings outlined for venues in Glendale, Atlanta, Arlington, Pasadena, Miami and New Orleans.

"Humility is a week away as we saw today," SEC coach Kirby Smart said after Georgia’s loss to Auburn.

"Fans need to start accepting the possibility of a 12-0 UCLA team," a CBS Sports analyst noted.

The projection underscores the volatility of the remaining schedule and the likely debates surrounding conference strength and loss totals as the selection committee prepares its first rankings.
