Eagles' defensive line struggles in loss to Cowboys despite big contracts for Carter and Davis

摘要

Philadelphia's defensive tackles Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, who received large extensions this offseason, were unable to stop Dallas' ground attack in a 38-21 defeat, raising questions about the team's roster decisions.

Philadelphia's defensive line was unable to contain the Dallas Cowboys' running game in a 38-21 loss on Monday night, allowing 204 rushing yards and no pressure on quarterback Dak Prescott. The performance highlighted ongoing issues with the Eagles' interior defense, which has been underperforming since the previous season.

Both defensive tackles, Jalen Carter (under a $152 million contract) and Jordan Davis (under a $78 million contract), have been central to the team's recent success, but the early results of their new deals have drawn scrutiny. Coach Nick Sirianni said, "> I think you’ve seen those guys be disruptive and you’ve seen those guys make quite a bit of plays. Obviously, we’re all going to want plays back from tonight and moments back from tonight."

The Cowboys established the run early, with Javonte Williams exploiting a gap for a 15-yard gain on the opening series. Dallas later amassed 155 rushing yards on 25 carries, including a 34-yard run in the fourth quarter, while the Eagles' interior linemen struggled with gap assignments and missed tackles.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit has also been criticized for a low pass-rush output, ranking near the bottom of the league in pressure rates. Carter recorded only two assisted tackles and no pressures in the game, and Davis acknowledged the challenge, stating, "> We knew it was kind of going to be this game. Their coach challenged them and they took it to heart and they ran the ball. Unfortunately, it’s not a game that we wanted to play, but you know we have to answer the call when we know it’s coming."

The loss adds to concerns about the Eagles' roster construction, as general manager Howie Roseman has invested heavily in the defensive line while allowing other key players to depart in free agency. Analysts note that the team may need to reassess its defensive strategy and personnel decisions moving forward.

"Right now, it’s just refocus," Davis added, emphasizing the need for the unit to regroup after the defeat.
