Macklemore launches "Free Palestine" tour in Dublin amid strong audience support

Resumen

The American rapper opened his "Free Palestine" concert series in Dublin, expressing solidarity with Palestinians and condemning the war in Gaza, after being removed from Ed Sheeran's tour for similar remarks.

American rapper Macklemore began his "Free Palestine" concert tour in Dublin, receiving a loud ovation from an audience that displayed Palestinian flags, keffiyeh scarves and related apparel. The performer said he was proud to stand on stage in solidarity with the Palestinian people and pledged to keep fighting for collective liberation "until our last breath."

Macklemore referenced the controversy that followed his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank at a New Jersey concert, which led to his removal from Ed Sheeran's U.S. tour. He said the two-word slogan "Free Palestine" had become more contentious than the suffering it seeks to address.

The 3Arena sold out its 13,000 tickets within minutes, and the crowd repeatedly chanted the slogan throughout the show. Attendee Siobhan Lyons told reporters the concert made her feel compelled to become involved in the cause.

Supporting acts included Irish musicians Hozier, rap group Kneecap, and folk ensemble Beoga, as well as Palestinian singer Lina Makhoul and DJ Habibeats. Actor Liam Cunningham also addressed the audience between sets.

Ed Sheeran, whose tour originally featured Macklemore, said venue owners threatened to block further shows that included the rapper.

Palestinian authorities estimate more than 74,000 deaths in Gaza following Israel's military response to the Oct. 7 attacks, while Israeli officials reject claims that their actions constitute genocide.
