BC Conservatives win majority as NDP vote share drops sharply

摘要

The BC Conservatives secured a majority government with 48% of the vote, while the NDP’s support fell by nearly 30%, amid a 48% voter turnout.

The British Columbia Conservatives captured a majority government, winning 64 of the province’s 93 legislative seats after receiving about 861,258 votes, according to preliminary results from Elections BC. The party’s share of the popular vote rose to 48%, putting it 11 points ahead of the New Democratic Party (NDP), which saw its vote total fall to 669,901.

The NDP, which formed a slim-majority government in 2024 under premier David Eby, lost nearly 30% of its previous vote count, dropping from 944,463 votes to the current total. The BC Greens increased their vote count by roughly 20,000, reaching 196,593 votes and earning 11% of the popular vote.

Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson thanked voters and pledged to govern for all British Columbians. > "With the decision made by British Columbians last night, I feel pretty compelled to say we’ve got a lot of support in this province," Doerkson said. > "I’m so thrilled with the support we’ve reached right across the province and absolutely excited to represent everyone in our party and everyone in British Columbia, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart."

Voter turnout fell to about 48%, roughly 10 percentage points lower than in the 2024 election. While pollsters did not predict the exact outcome, they noted a sizable share of undecided or dissatisfied voters.

Strategist Mark Marissen, a former BC Liberal organizer, expressed disappointment with Eby’s performance and highlighted concerns about the Conservative caucus, noting that some members admired Donald Trump’s political style. He called for a centrist, Liberal-branded alternative in the province.

The election also marked the second consecutive cycle in which BC United fielded no candidates, a situation that could lead to the party’s deregistration under the Election Act, potentially freeing the BC Liberal name for future use.
