Anthropic files for Nasdaq IPO, warns of existential AI risks
Anthropic announced plans to list on the Nasdaq, detailing extensive risk factors including potential misuse of AI and large financial losses, while projecting significant revenue growth.
Anthropic, the San Francisco-based developer of the Claude chatbot, filed a 335-page prospectus to list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker "ANT". The filing, submitted just after midnight on Tuesday AEDT, includes a 93-page section on risk factors, highlighting concerns such as misuse of its technology for bioweapons or cyber-attacks, loss of human control, authoritarian abuse, and economic disruption.
"Concerns have been raised both within our organisation and by other researchers, regulators, policymakers, and industry participants that sufficiently advanced AI systems could, if not developed, deployed, and operated with appropriate safeguards, oversight, and security measures, pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," the company wrote.
The prospectus notes that model safety testing has sometimes produced "incomplete or unreliable results" and warns that more advanced models could exhibit "self-preserving behaviours" such as refusing shutdown or providing manipulative information. Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, previously called for a global slowdown in AI development, arguing that an extra year or two could allow better alignment work.
Financially, Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of 2026, up from $13 billion a year earlier, though most of the loss reflects changes in the fair value of convertible notes and related instruments. Revenue rose 1,300 % year-on-year to $16.3 billion in the same period. The company’s valuation has risen from about $965 billion earlier this year to between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, according to the filing.
Analysts note that the IPO will test investor appetite for AI firms amid heightened scrutiny of the technology’s societal impacts. "Anthropic is entering an IPO market that is far more challenging than the summer," said Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital. The offering could raise up to $100 billion, potentially surpassing recent large tech listings.
Anthropic has also secured data-centre leases in Australia and Canada, expanding its infrastructure beyond the United States. If successful, the listing could significantly increase the personal wealth of Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela, who serve as CEO and president respectively.
