Actor Walter Koenig, known for playing Ensign Chekov, dies at 90

Resumen

Walter Koenig, the original Star Trek actor who portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov, died at his North Hollywood home at age 90, surrounded by family.

Walter Koenig, best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, died at his North Hollywood, California, home on Sunday at the age of 90, his agency said in a Facebook post on Monday. The agency added that he died of old age and was accompanied by his daughter Danielle and his niece.

The statement from his representatives highlighted Koenig’s impact beyond the screen, noting his frequent convention appearances and interactions with fans. "He understood what ‘Star Trek’ meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it," the agency said.

Co-star George Takei, who played Sulu, posted a message on Facebook expressing his long-standing friendship with Koenig, which began in 1960. Takei described Koenig as a writer, teacher, and loyal friend.

Born on September 14, 1936, in Chicago to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Koenig grew up in New York City. He initially pursued pre-medical studies at Grinnell College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a BA in psychology. A professor at UCLA encouraged him to try acting, leading him to the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.

Early television work included appearances on Combat! (1962), The Untouchables (1963) and two episodes of General Hospital (1963). He secured the role of Chekov in 1967, joining the Star Trek cast for its second season. Koenig remained with the series through its third season and later reprised the character in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), as well as other franchise projects.

His most recent screen credits include the 2025 film Raging Midlife and the 2025 short Lost Voyages: Phase II and the Rebirth of Star Trek, in which he appeared as himself. Koenig married actress Judy Levitt in 1965; the couple had a daughter, Danielle, and a son, Andrew, who died in 2010. Levitt passed away in 2022.
