Actor Walter Koenig, original Star Trek’s Chekov, dies at 90
Walter Koenig, who portrayed Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, died at his home in North Hollywood at age 90, leaving only two surviving principal cast members.
Walter Koenig, best known for playing Pavel Chekov on the original "Star Trek" television series, died on Monday at his North Hollywood home at the age of 90, his representative said. Talent agent Zachery McGinnis confirmed the death and praised Koenig’s “talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances” that resonated with generations of fans.
Koenig’s passing reduces the number of surviving primary cast members from the 1966-1969 series to two: William Shatner, 95, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk, and George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu. Takei, who served as Koenig’s best man in 2008, described his longtime friend as “thoughtful” and “loyal,” adding that Koenig was more than his on-screen role.
The actor first appeared as Chekov in the series’ second season, contributing to the show’s vision of multicultural cooperation in a futuristic setting. He reprised the role in seven Star Trek films released between 1979 and 1994. Beyond his screen work, Koenig remained active in fan conventions and public appearances, engaging directly with the franchise’s audience, according to his agent.
