Jack Antonoff says performing songs about ex Margaret Qualley remains a beautiful experience

Résumé

The Bleachers frontman explained that singing about his recent split from actress Margaret Qualley is emotionally challenging but ultimately rewarding for both him and his audience.

Jack Antonoff, the Grammy-winning frontman of Bleachers, told The Guardian that performing songs inspired by his recent separation from actress Margaret Qualley is "really beautiful," despite initial worries about addressing the subject on stage. After reconsidering his set list for the current tour, Antonoff said he chose to be honest with his audience, accepting the risk of ongoing scrutiny.

"The deal I’ve made with my audience is that I’m going to tell you honestly how I feel and I’m going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it forever," he said.

He added that sharing personal sadness can have "great power" because it resonates with listeners, noting that the experience has allowed fans to connect with the meaning behind his songs.

"It’s actually been really beautiful. For people to come together, to know what I write a song about, to know how that must feel for me now, to know what that song means to you as an audience member, to just hold it all and celebrate," Antonoff explained.

The musician emphasized his preference for confronting personal matters publicly rather than privately, stating that he does not attempt to rewrite the past and feels no shame about his past statements.

"I’m standing there, singing about how I felt during the good times, so when the bad times hit I can’t look myself in the mirror and pretend those times didn’t exist," he concluded.

Qualley’s representative did not respond to requests for comment. The couple, who married in August 2023 after dating for two years, announced their separation in July after nearly three years of marriage. While they have not indicated plans to reconcile, a source indicated they remain in respectful communication.
