Chris Brown Receives Suspended Prison Sentence for 2023 Nightclub Attack

Résumé

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray over a 2023 assault at a London nightclub.

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray for an assault at a London nightclub in February 2023. The court also suspended a four-month sentence for his co-defendant, Florida rapper Omololu Akinlolu, who was identified as Brown’s vocal coach.

During the hearing, Judge Tony Baumgartner warned that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not merit special treatment, stating, "I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone."

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the pair attacked music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle and a punch, continuing the assault as the victim tried to flee. The victim was hospitalized with head and knee injuries. After leaving the United Kingdom, Brown was arrested in May 2025 upon his return for a world tour stop in Manchester.

"This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice," said Claire Campbell, senior prosecutor at CPS London South.

Charges of assault, grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon were withdrawn after the guilty plea to affray.
