Chris Brown receives suspended eight-month sentence for London nightclub assault

Summary

R&B singer Chris Brown and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu were sentenced to suspended custodial terms after pleading guilty to affray over a February 2023 incident in a London club.

R&B singer Chris Brown and his vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu were each given suspended custodial sentences after pleading guilty to affray stemming from a February 2023 assault in the VIP area of Tape nightclub in London. Judge Tony Baumgartner sentenced Brown to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and Akinlolu to four months, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 each toward prosecution costs.

Baumgartner described Brown's repeated use of a glass bottle to strike victim Abe Diaw, including twice on the head, as "plainly dangerous" and noted that the violence, though brief, was "intense" and could have caused much more serious injury. The judge said Brown played a leading role in the joint offending and that his previous violent convictions from 2009 and 2013 were relevant, though dated.

Akinlolu did not initiate the attack, the judge said, but became an "active participant" and played a "significant" role, delivering punches and a kick while the victim was on the ground. The court heard that the incident lasted roughly 17 to 20 seconds in a crowded, confined environment.

In sentencing, Baumgartner rejected any special treatment for Brown based on his fame, commercial success, or professional standing, while acknowledging mitigating factors such as Brown's charitable work, stable employment, and his role as a father of four. The judge also noted Brown's low risk of reoffending as indicated in a pre-sentence report.

"This is an ugly and unattractive incident," said Brown's defence lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, adding that Brown offers a profound apology to those present.

The victim, Diaw, suffered head trauma, cervical-spine tenderness, abdominal tenderness and reduced movement in his left knee, according to the judge's description of his injuries. The court reviewed CCTV footage showing Brown striking Diaw four times with a tequila bottle and Akinlolu delivering a kick.

Both defendants avoided immediate imprisonment provided they do not commit further offenses during the suspension period.
