Kimi Antonelli wins United States Grand Prix, Russell finishes eighth
Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Circuit of the Americas, while George Russell and Red Bull faced setbacks, according to post-race analysis.
Kimi Antonelli claimed his first win at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, reinforcing Mercedes' recent upgrade after mixed results in earlier Asian races. The victory moved Antonelli to the top of the drivers' standings and gave Mercedes a strong points haul.
George Russell finished eighth after describing his race as "six good laps, 50 bad laps" and calling his pace "rubbish". A five-second penalty further hampered his effort, and he expressed frustration with the weekend's performance.
Lando Norris recovered to fifth place, benefiting from a team instruction that allowed him to pass teammate Oscar Piastri early in the race. His result reflected a more effective medium/hard tyre strategy compared with the soft-compound approaches used by Ferrari and Red Bull.
Red Bull's drivers were unable to match their qualifying pace, with Max Verstappen finishing third and his teammate Isack Hadjar sixth. Both drivers reported engine and clutch issues, and Hadjar noted radio problems that led to an incorrect engine map selection.
Charles Leclerc finished second for Ferrari, indicating that the team's Austin upgrade improved performance. He noted that a one-stop strategy by Antonelli was unexpected, as Ferrari and Red Bull had planned two stops.
Lewis Hamilton placed fourth after making several setup adjustments during practice and the race to address understeer.
Fernando Alonso ended the race in 16th for Aston Martin, citing damage to the car's bargeboards and a slow second pit stop. He considered retiring before the front-wing change but continued to race.
Liam Lawson scored points with a ninth-place finish for Racing Bulls, describing the weekend as "strong" and the car as performing well throughout.
Ollie Bearman retired after a lap-two incident with Pierre Gasly that resulted in a 10-second penalty for Bearman. He disputed the penalty, describing the contact as a racing incident.
Pierre Gasly secured tenth place, adding a point for Alpine despite the earlier collision that affected his downforce.
"Six good laps, 50 bad laps," Russell said when asked about his performance. "The pace just was rubbish," Russell told Sky Sports F1. "The clutch is fragile and needs a redesign," Hadjar said after the race. "I was ready to switch it off," Alonso said about his car's condition. "I don't regret going for the move," Bearman added regarding his overtaking attempt.
The results reshaped the championship standings, with Ferrari outscoring Red Bull and Mercedes at Austin.
