Veteran QB Kirk Cousins Stresses Performance Over Tenure Amid Raiders' Losing Streak
Kirk Cousin addressed speculation about being replaced by rookie Fernando Mendoza, saying he will step aside if he is not the team's best option as the Raiders seek to reverse a four-game losing run.
Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins said he will relinquish his role if he is not the most effective option for the Raiders, who have dropped four consecutive games after starting the season with three wins. Cousins told reporters that his stance has not changed since the offseason, adding, "If I’m not the best option then I don’t want to be out there, either. I want our football team to have the best chance to win games." He noted that the organization will act in its best interest and praised rookie first-round pick Fernando Mendoza, saying the young quarterback has a promising future and that he aims to set a good example for him. Cousins said he will continue to play at his highest level while helping Mendoza develop, until the rookie is ready to assume a larger role. The Raiders' coaching staff may consider a change to spark a turnaround before the team's playoff prospects diminish, though no decision has been announced.
