Thomas Markle Sr. faces Philippine investigation over alleged child sexual abuse material

摘要

Philippine authorities are investigating Thomas Markle Sr. after child sexual abuse images were reportedly found in his home, while Meghan Markle expressed distress over the case.

Philippine police are investigating Thomas Markle Sr., the father of Meghan Markle, after authorities say child sexual abuse images were discovered in his residence in Cebu. The investigation follows a 2019 letter sent by his former wife, Roslyn Loveless, to London’s Metropolitan Police, in which she alleged that Markle traveled to the Philippines and Thailand because "12-year-olds are legal there." The letter was forwarded to the Metropolitan Police’s Fixated Threat Assessment Center, which handles threats to public figures, and copies were provided to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

According to reports, Markle’s son, Thomas Jr., found the materials in several boxes and turned them over to local police. The former lighting director, now 82, has denied the allegations, describing them as false. Philippine Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla said officials are reviewing forensic evidence, which is expected to be completed within a week.

Meghan Markle issued a statement saying she is "deeply distressed" by the investigation and reiterated that she has kept her father at a distance to protect her children. She added that she hopes the legal process will ensure the safety of children and that justice will be served.

The case highlights differing legal ages of consent: in 2019 the Philippines set the age at 12, though paying for sex with anyone under 18 remained illegal; the age was raised to 16 in 2022.
