Nate Silver forecasts high Democratic odds in Senate and House races

Resumen

Statistician Nate Silver's FLIPR model projects a 75-76% chance for Democrats to win the Senate and a 95% chance to retain the House in the upcoming midterms.

Statistician Nate Silver discussed his FLIPR forecasting model on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, indicating that Democrats have a 75 to 76 percent probability of winning the Senate and a 95 percent chance of keeping control of the House. The model, which Silver runs on his Substack newsletter, recently upgraded the Senate outlook from a "Lean D" to a "Likely D," according to Newsweek.

Silver cited several factors influencing the forecast, including gasoline prices of about $4.30 per gallon and President Donald Trump's 37 percent approval rating. He also referenced historical trends of the president's party losing seats in midterm elections, noting the GOP's loss of 41 House seats in 2018, as well as high turnout in Democratic primaries and early voting data.

"I don’t think it’s fair to assume there will be shy Ken Paxton voters or shy Roger Marshall voters," Silver said when questioned about potential polling biases. "Republicans did not beat their polling in 2018 or 2022. The midterm polling was quite unbiased."

Zakaria highlighted that Trump's approval rating is the lowest for any incumbent president before a midterm election, comparing it to historic lows under President Harry Truman in 1946 and President George W. Bush in 2006, both of which preceded losses in both chambers.

Silver added that rising gas prices could further impact voter sentiment, suggesting that higher fuel costs may benefit Democratic prospects.

The discussion underscored the combination of economic indicators, approval ratings, and historical patterns shaping the current electoral outlook.
