Protesters breach Rome's Colosseum amid nationwide demonstrations

Resumen

Hundreds of demonstrators entered the Roman Colosseum and police used force to remove them, while thousands marched in cities across Italy over the cost-of-living crisis and the war in Gaza.

Hundreds of demonstrators entered the Roman Colosseum on Saturday, prompting police to intervene and clear the historic site. The participants, many carrying Palestinian flags, moved through the arena before security forces escorted them out.

The incident was part of a broader wave of protests that saw thousands of people march in Rome, Milan, Turin and other Italian cities. Demonstrators voiced concerns over rising living costs and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Italian authorities had designated the Colosseum a security “red zone” the previous month after a series of disturbances involving tourists. In addition to the Colosseum clash, police reported a confrontation near Piazza della Repubblica where tear gas and water cannons were deployed.

In Milan, activists placed manure outside the national energy regulator’s headquarters and set fire to a large electricity bill. Local businesses boarded their windows following recent incidents of looting in France.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ordered the deployment of about 500 soldiers to support the 5,000 police officers already on the ground in Milan. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said the troops were equipped with plastic restraint ties but not with pepper spray or Tasers.
