Manchester United consider new manager as Michael Carrick's future looks uncertain after 3-0 loss
Following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that extended United's winless streak to eight games, the club is expected to move quickly on replacing head coach Michael Carrick, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann named as leading candidates.
Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, marking their eighth consecutive match without a win and leaving the club just above the relegation zone. The loss intensified speculation that head coach Michael Carrick could be dismissed.
Club officials, including director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, are expected to recommend a decision to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Insiders say the hierarchy will accelerate the process, with Carrick likely to be relieved of his duties.
Former player Gary Neville, commenting during the match broadcast, said, "It is going to get ridiculously difficult for Michael Carrick to be Manchester United manager moving forward. That's the problem the club have got."
Former defender Jamie Carragher added, "Michael Carrick needs to be relieved of his duties tonight, not just for the good of Manchester United but also for the good of Michael Carrick. It has become untenable."
If a change occurs, Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe are identified as the front-running candidates. Both are reportedly available without requiring compensation. Howe, who left Newcastle in July, has expressed interest in returning to management, and former United sporting director Dan Ashworth previously recommended him. Wilcox is said to favor a coach with Premier League experience.
Nagelsmann, who previously worked with United's head of recruitment Christopher Vivell at RB Leipzig, is also linked to the role after leaving his position as Germany head coach.
Other names mentioned include Unai Emery and Antonio Conte, though they are not currently viewed as leading options. Carragher, however, advocated for Emery, stating, "He is a manager I look at when I think about Manchester United. I think Emery is the best manager in the Premier League."
The club is expected to make a decision promptly as the season progresses.
