UN Commission Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza, Calls for Global Action
A UN commission has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and urges international intervention to halt the actions and hold perpetrators accountable.
An independent panel of experts commissioned by the United Nations Human Rights Council has concluded that Israeli authorities and security forces have committed and continue to commit acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The report, released Tuesday by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, states that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza.
The commission's findings are based on evidence collected and analyzed regarding alleged human rights violations by all parties in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which escalated following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The report identifies four specific acts constituting genocide: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm; deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the group's physical destruction; and imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.
Navi Pillay, Chair of the Commission, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The ongoing genocide in Gaza is a moral outrage and a legal emergency." She urged member states to ensure accountability and prevent further crimes not only in Gaza but throughout the occupied Palestinian territory.
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed the report as "fake," asserting that it relies entirely on Hamas falsehoods. He contended that Hamas is the party that attempted genocide in Israel, citing the October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people.
The commission also highlighted statements by Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as evidence of genocidal intent. It concluded that Israel bears responsibility for failing to prevent, commit, and punish acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The report calls on Israel to immediately end the commission of genocide in Gaza, implement a permanent ceasefire, and allow the free flow of humanitarian aid into the territory. It also urges other UN member states to employ all means reasonably available to prevent the commission of genocide, including halting the transfer of arms and other equipment to Israel.
This development follows previous accusations by scholars and human rights groups. In August, the International Association of Genocide Scholars declared that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Additionally, the International Court of Justice is currently hearing a case brought by South Africa's government accusing Israeli forces of committing genocide. Israel has consistently dismissed these claims as biased and false, attributing them to misinformation spread by Hamas.
