NC State dismisses head football coach Dave Doeren after 3-4 start
North Carolina State University terminated Dave Doeren as head football coach following a 31-28 loss to Stanford, and an interim coach will lead the team while a national search begins.
North Carolina State announced Saturday that it has terminated head football coach Dave Doeren. The decision came after the Wolfpack fell to a 3-4 record with a 31-28 defeat by Stanford.
Athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement, "I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride. I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, [wife] Sara and his family the best in the future."
Doeren, who took over the program in 2013 after two seasons at Northern Illinois, compiled a 98-73 record at NC State and guided the team to 11 bowl games in 13 full seasons, including the last six consecutive appearances. This season the Wolfpack are 1-3 in ACC play.
After the loss, Doeren said, "It starts with me. The guys didn’t play well enough which means I didn’t have them ready."
Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel, on staff since 2019, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The university said a national search for a permanent head coach will begin immediately, with the next head coach expected to take over when the team hosts California on Halloween.
