Denmark Leads Arctic Military Exercise Amid Rising Tensions
Denmark is conducting a military exercise in Greenland with NATO allies, coinciding with heightened geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region.
Denmark is leading a military exercise in Greenland, involving over 550 service members from NATO allies including France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. The Arctic Light 2025 exercise aims to enhance the operational readiness of the Danish armed forces and their partners in the strategically significant Arctic region.
The exercise includes ship boarding drills by Danish special forces, observed by military representatives from the United States, Britain, Canada, Sweden, and Germany. These drills feature troops descending from helicopters and ascending from speedboats in near-freezing temperatures. Additionally, Danish F-16 fighter jets are conducting flybys and live-fire exercises.
Denmark's Chief of Joint Arctic Command, Maj. Gen. Søren Andersen, highlighted the importance of the exercise in light of Russia's increased military presence in the Arctic over the past two decades. He noted that Russia is considered a regional superpower in the Arctic.
The exercise also underscores Denmark's commitment to strengthening its military presence in Greenland and the broader North Atlantic. In January, Denmark announced a 14.6 billion kroner ($2.3 billion) investment to enhance surveillance and sovereignty in the region, including the acquisition of three new Arctic naval vessels, two long-range surveillance drones, and satellite capacity.
This military activity occurs amid heightened geopolitical interest in Greenland. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire for U.S. jurisdiction over the territory, citing its strategic importance.
Denmark's defense minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, emphasized the country's preference for collaborating with NATO allies to enhance cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. However, he also expressed willingness to proceed independently if necessary.
The Arctic Light 2025 exercise is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
