Actor Eric Dane Dies at 53 After ALS Diagnosis
Eric Dane, known for roles on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," died at 53 following a year-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which he publicly disclosed in 2025.
Actor Eric Dane, 53, passed away on February 19 after a year-long struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He announced his diagnosis in April 2025, saying he was grateful for his family's support as he faced the disease. Despite the diagnosis, Dane continued to work, filming the final season of the HBO series "Euphoria" and starring in the Amazon MGM Studios series "Countdown."
In a June 2025 interview on Good Morning America, Dane described the first symptom—a weakness in his right hand—that he initially dismissed as fatigue. After months of consultations with hand specialists and neurologists, doctors confirmed the ALS diagnosis. He later explained that his right side had ceased functioning and anticipated further decline.
Dane credited his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters for providing emotional support throughout his illness. He also discussed his advocacy efforts, meeting with doctors, the I Am ALS organization, and California Congressman Eric Swalwell to promote research funding.
The family released a statement confirming that Dane spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife, and their daughters, and requested privacy during this period.
