Apple launches $2,000 iPhone Duo foldable phone amid strong global demand

Apple released its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, in stores across multiple continents, pricing the base model at roughly $2,000. The launch saw strong consumer interest, but Apple limited purchases to two units per customer and required walk-in shoppers in most markets, while online orders were the only option in China, France, Hong Kong, India and Japan.

Pre-order demand outstripped supply, prompting Apple to push delivery dates to late January. The company described the response as “nothing short of extraordinary.” In Sydney, a line formed before the store opened at 8 a.m., and similar queues appeared in Austin, New York, London, San Francisco and Shanghai.

John Ternus, Apple’s chief executive, greeted customers at the Austin store, while marketing head Greg Joswiak opened the Fifth Avenue location. Some buyers, such as a San Francisco consultant who missed the pre-order window, resorted to overnight camping to secure a device.

Early reviews highlighted the Duo’s sleek design and a discreet hinge, but noted compromises such as the absence of a telephoto lens and limited app optimization for the larger screen. Reviewers also pointed out that the folded device may be less convenient for quick tasks. Long-time Apple commentator John Gruber described the experience as “an extraordinarily polished prototype, not a finished product.” Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee suggested the phone may not suit average users, while other creators praised its combined phone-tablet functionality.

Market research firm IDC projected that Apple could capture 44% of foldable-phone market value by 2026 and become the leader in both value and unit shipments by 2027, indicating the Duo could broaden consumer exposure to the foldable format.
