NHTSA Investigates Tesla Model Y Door Handle Failures

Summary

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating reports of inoperative door handles on approximately 174,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles from the 2021 model year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into approximately 174,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles from the 2021 model year following reports of door handle malfunctions. The agency has received nine complaints from owners unable to open exterior doors, particularly after exiting the vehicle to attend to children in the rear seats. In four instances, owners resorted to breaking windows to regain entry.

Preliminary findings suggest that the electronic door locks may become inoperative due to insufficient voltage from the vehicle's battery system. Notably, none of the complainants reported receiving low-voltage battery warnings prior to the incidents. While Tesla vehicles are equipped with manual door releases inside, these can be difficult for children to access, and some owners are unaware of their existence.

Tesla has not responded to requests for comment regarding the investigation.
