Hannah Gosselin Responds to Brother Collin's Memoir Allegations

Résumé

Hannah Gosselin addressed claims made in her brother Collin's memoir about their childhood on the reality show, while representatives for Kate Gosselin, TLC and Dr. Phil declined comment.

Hannah Gosselin spoke publicly for the first time since the release of her brother Collin Gosselin's memoir, "Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood," to address the allegations detailed in the book. The memoir describes Collin's experiences growing up on the reality series "Kate Plus 8," including being confined to a basement room with an air mattress, limited contact with his father, and claims of physical and emotional mistreatment by his mother, Kate Gosselin.

Collin alleges that the network offered his parents $2 million to remain together for the sake of the show, a claim that Jon Gosselin previously denied, stating he could not live with a lie. He also recounts multiple complaints filed against Kate Gosselin to Children and Youth Services and describes an episode in which he was allegedly restrained with zip ties and subjected to physical force.

The memoir further details Collin's admission to a behavioral health facility shortly before his 12th birthday, where he says he was medicated for an extended period and experienced painful restraints. He later transferred to a residential facility, reconnected with his father, and eventually moved in with Jon Gosselin and his then-girlfriend.

Kate Gosselin previously described Collin as having received multiple psychiatric diagnoses and inpatient treatment, while Jon Gosselin has said he is unaware of any formal diagnosis beyond ADHD. A spokesperson for Dr. Phil called Collin's allegations "false" and said the talk-show host had no financial interest in the series.

Representatives for Kate Gosselin, TLC and the behavioral health facility did not respond to requests for comment. Hannah Gosselin's remarks, posted on social media, emphasized the family's desire for privacy and urged the public to focus on the well-being of all involved.

"We appreciate the concern, but we ask that people respect our family's privacy as we continue to heal," Hannah Gosselin wrote.

The memoir and the ensuing public statements have reignited debate over the treatment of children on reality television and the responsibilities of networks and parents in such environments.
