LeBron James Faces Hostile Reaction from Knicks Fans During Sixers Victory
LeBron James received chants of "We don't want you" from Madison Square Garden spectators as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New York Knicks, prompting a brief verbal exchange about his recent move to New York.
The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New York Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday, but the game was marked by a hostile reception for the league's newest New York resident, LeBron James. As James approached the free-throw line early in the first half, the crowd chanted, "We don't want you," according to NBC commentator Mike Tirico.
Later in the first half, James engaged in a brief back-and-forth with courtside fans while the Knicks were at the foul line. The discussion centered on James' use of a helicopter to travel between Philadelphia and his New York residence. Spike Lee, dressed in a Knicks suit, attempted to intervene.
"Hey, LeBron, just because you have a helicopter and you live in New York doesn't mean we're gonna cheer for you," a fan said, as reported by Tirico.
James responded that he is from Ohio and questioned the criticism.
"I'm not from the West Coast. I'm Ohio, baby. …" he replied.
James finished the game with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Earlier this season, James had spoken about his desire to play for the Knicks and help the franchise win a title, but he signed with the Sixers and later said he would not pursue a move after the Knicks won the NBA championship in June.
When asked after the game whether the Sixers had ruined the Knicks' celebration, James disagreed with that characterization.
