Oregon teacher recounts being shot and feigning death during school shooting
Teacher Becky Drury described how she was wounded at close range and pretended to be dead after a 16-year-old gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary, killing three children and a teacher.
Teacher Becky Drury, 54, said she was shot at close range while trying to close the door of her classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School on Oct. 15. She wrote that the gunman entered before she could act, striking her in the left hand and injuring her other arm, leaving her unable to rise or defend others. Drury said she then lay still, hoping the shooter would think she was dead.
The incident resulted in the deaths of three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, with a 7-year-old student also seriously wounded. Police identified the shooter as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former student, who fired through locked doors before entering a special-needs classroom.
According to authorities, another teacher tackled the gunman, and an armed bystander, 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, fatally shot him after he entered the school. Drury said she is sharing her account to ensure accurate reporting of her actions that day.
"I was shot before I had any chance to act," Drury wrote.
"I want to make sure the events of that day and my actions in particular are reported accurately," she added.
Drury thanked supporters and expressed sorrow for the community.
